Introduction
The primary objective of an occupational health and safety training is to plan, direct and co-ordinate all activities connected with the promotion and protection of the environment, health, safety and welfare of workers. There is therefore an urgent need to train highly competent occupational health, environment and safety professionals with high academic and professional qualifications to be responsible for the formulation and implementation of policies and programmes towards the promotion and protection of health and safety of the workforce.
At present, there are no universities in Nigeria that offer this opportunity to cater for this urgent need in manpower development of the Nation. A lot of organizations and individuals are longing to see Nigerian Universities bridge this gap, therefore, the University of Port Harcourt through the Institute of Petroleum Studies’ “INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATIVE GRADUATE PROGRAMMES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH INDUSTRY” is strategically positioned to offer this training.
A. Master of Science (M.Sc) Degree Programme in Occupational Health and Safety
Programme Objective
The aim of this professional industrial Health and Safety programme is to provide graduates with broad based training required for industrial health and safety management in the petroleum, power, chemical, transport etc industries.
On completion of the Masters’ Programme, the graduates will among other skills, be able to:
1. Appreciate the regulatory framework for safety management in industry
2. Evaluate and manage occupational risks and hazards in the industry
3. Plan, Prevent and Manage Fire and Explosion
4. Conduct Unsafe Acts Audits in Plants and Facilities
5. Design, supervise, and evaluate safety facilities/programmes in onshore and offshore industry
6. Participate effectively in multi-disciplinary project development teams.
7. Handle chemical processes and avoid the toxicological effects
8. Train manpower for chemical hygiene protocols
Duration of Programme
The duration of the programme shall be 12 calendar months of intensive full time study. Industry/company workers can equally attend modular/sandwich programmes and accumulate credits.
Award of Degree
Successful students at the end of the programme shall receive an M.Sc in Occupational health and Safety of the University of Port Harcourt.
Admission Requirements
For admission into the programme, candidates must possess a minimum of Second Class (Upper Division) Honours Bachelor’s degree in Science and Engineering. Industry/company workers with 3 years cognate experience who possess a 2nd Class (Lower Division) Honours Bachelors degree (with Cumulative Grade Point Average, CGPA of 3.0 or better) will also be admitted.
B. Master of Science (M.Sc) Degree Programme in Environmental Technology & Management
Programme Objective
The aim of this professional environmental technology and management programme is to provide graduates with broad based training required for waste management at all levels of waste generation – domestic, commercial and industrial.
On completion of the Masters’ programme, the graduates will among other skills, be able to:
1. Carry out field measurements on air and water pollution and select effective control measures.
2. Plan and execute urban solid waste collection, waste minimization such resource recovery recycling/reuse, in addition to route optimization as a cost-saving approach to transportation and disposal.
3. Design and evaluate the performance of wastewater treatment plants especially the activated sludge system through computer-aided approach.
4. Design such facilities as sanitary landfill and incinerator as means of waste disposal system.
5. Conduct baseline studies, environmental impact assessment and audits for companies/industries.
6. Appreciate the regulatory framework for safe environments at both the local and international levels.
