Introduction
The Institute of Petroleum Studies (IPS) is an international post graduate institution established through a collaboration between Ecole du Petrole et des Moteurs (IFP School) France and the University of Port Harcourt Nigeria in the year 2002.  IFP School is in international collaboration & partnership with world renowned universities spread across the globe. These universities include The Imperial College of Science & Technology, London (UK); Colorado School of Mines (USA); McGill University (Canada); Technical University, Delft (The Netherlands) and Universite Gubkin (Russia). The University of Port Harcourt is also in international collaboration with leading universities in South Africa, United States of America and Canada. These collaborations have brought together different cultures, academic programmes and technology applications.

Mission
The mission of the Institute is to meet the needs of the petroleum industry through a commitment to excellence in training, applied research, continuing education and capacity building.

Vision
The vision of the Institute of Petroleum Studies is to become the foremost international Centre of Excellence in Petroleum Geosciences & Technology, Petroleum Economics & Management, and Petroleum Policy & Strategic Studies in Africa.

Philosophy
The culture of excellence in sustained learning, leadership, internationalism and professionalism advancement and propagation of knowledge in the petroleum industry.

Objective
The objective of the Institute is to be the industry training and research hub for manpower in the Gulf of Guinea. The Institute also aims to serve as the facilitator of the Nigerian local content initiative

IPS Programmes
IPS offers the following programmes
•    PhD in Petroleum Engineering & Project Development
•    MSc in Petroleum Engineering & Project Development
•    PGD in Petroleum Technology
•    Msc  in Petroleum Geosciences and Reservoir  Engineering
•    MSc in Environmental Technology & Management
•    MSc in Occupational Health and Safety

There is also an Offshore Technology Centre which offers the following MSc programmes; Subsea Engineering and Project Management, Offshore Engineering, Pipeline Engineering, Risk, Safety and Reliability Engineering, LNG and Refinery Technology, Renewable Energy Technology, Project Management-Offshore Field Development (Deepwater), Asset Integrity Management-Offshore and  Oil & Gas Structural Engineering.
Centre for Continuing Education


This Centre is aimed at providing a platform for specialized and in-depth training to enable participants perform as specialists and professional experts in their chosen career. We have a multidisciplinary pool of consultants and experts in Nigeria and abroad who have many years of experience as Lecturers. With such a high caliber expertise, we deliver professional and high quality Short Courses to enable the participants perform with high competence at local and international levels.
Statistics


As at 2011, IPS has graduated 156 Masters Students and 60 Post Graduate Diploma Students. Most of these graduates are employed by International Companies like Baker Hughes, Halliburton Energy Services, Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC), Trans Ocean, Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Statoil Norway, Chevron Nigeria Ltd, Exxon Mobil, Schlumberger and TOTAL E&P Nigeria to name a few.
